Car started cold, did an 8 mile journey, then left for half an hour and this is what happens.

if u have had a compression test done, and it does if from first start up im still saying valve stem seals, its all the classic symptoms. I suppose it could be the turbo but tbh very unlikely as it would do it all the time

Compression test gave a result of 12bar on all cylinders but ruined 2 coil packs in the process- i then limped the car home about a mile.
This now gets me thinking could the cat be knackered?
The car does not smoke at all on the first cold start of the day only light steam as you get from any cold engine

ok so it seems u have a few issues here, black smoke = over fueling, im assuming u have no codes stored or lights on?

But as u stated earlier u r using oil 1ltr per 800-1000 miles.

Have u checked the oil return pipe? for cracks and oil seal
Even tho its coming out the back it could be the outside of the exhaust.

Do u have any sort of code reader that is capable of data logging?
