Laminated Glass
Hi,
What is the benefit of this option?? I read that it reduces water spots on the glass while raining..... ? Is that it? |

The rain repellant effect is due to a coating applied to the laminated glass for the driver/passenger windows only. Nothing to do with the type of glass itself.
Laminated glass is, supposedly, more secure since it's harder for scrotes to break. It also has, allegedly, better sound-proofing characteristics. I can vouch for the rain-repellant's effectiveness, but can't comment on the others. |

which? magazine rates cars with laminate side windows which would normally be 4 star for "stealing from" security (as opposed to "theft of"), as 5 star.

My impression in my XC60 is that laminated side windows provide improved sound insulation, but that is only an impression. I have no means of making a direct comparison.
As to security, whenever someone has tried to break into one of my cars they have gone for the door lock (and not always successfully) rather than the window. The XC60 has so far not received any unwelcome attention. In fact it tends to receive interested scrutiny from other crossover/4x4 drivers, but that is a different matter.

I wonder (although I am sure I already know the answer) if this feature lowers insurance??
(it should, but I bet it doesnt - wouldnt be shocked if it made it more) |

I just wish we could have the Laminated Glass, and while I'm at it, Subwoofer and Hill Decent, available as options here in the U.S.

I have specced laminated glass on mine for the reasons quoted above. The only reason I hesitated was that the difficulty in breaking in could apply equally to breaking out, should you need to do so. Then I thought "what are the chances?". Also I know you can get a special hammer for laminated glass (all the robbers have them!) if you're really paranoid (I am). (Must stop using parentheses).

It also cuts out most of the UV light, which is an added benefit.

Had laminated glass in my previous car and got to drive the same car without but noticed absolutely no difference regarding sound insulation so needless to say I did not bother ordering it for my XC60. Do I regret my decision? Not a bit.
