Default C70 incrediebly light!

when i bought my C70, it was as a second car for my work trips (and something to polish etc) so my wife could have full use of our family car, an Audi A3 sportback.

The Audi is very underpowered for our van being a 1.6 petrol, even though the van is only 1050 fully laden.

I bought the C70 as i thought Volvos, especially the bigger ones made fantastic tow cars.

I was quite suprised to find that my 2.4T X plate C70 only weighs 1448kg( only 200kg more than my little audi!), meaning an 85% match of around 1250kgs.

That 1250kgs means im well within our current vans range, but its an old 1991 thing and will get replaced in the next year or two.

There arent many modern vans, that are 4 berth that fall under 1250max laden these days, and thats towing with a big Volvo.

Quite suprised. What does everyone else tow and how does it compare with the 85% recommended match? I see loads of smaller mondeos and the like towing much newer/bigger vans than we have

PS, how does the 2.4T tow generally (even in 850 form) compared to a diesel?

I've towed for over thirty years with most models of volvo the best being the old 740 and then the v70 and currently the xc90.I'm not surprised the c70 is a bit lightweight compared too the big estates and the 4x4's so you dont see many of them towing.Weight is very important when matching an outfit together.Caravans are getting bigger and heavier every year so its a real problem for some towcars.

We have had a variety of Bailey caravans for the last 18 years, they are usually the lightest van in their class and the build quality is good.
To keep your weight down you will need either to buy an older model or one of the lower specced new models such as the Orion which is just below your limit.

Just had a quick check on parkers guide and the max towing wieght for a C70 upto 02 is 1600kgs.
Dont forget the 85% isnt law its just a recommendation.
