The post above is so right!
We have 2 English Springers and a Border Collie. We have a Toyota Hilux for everyday transport for the dogs (and horse bits) and have just bought (again) a XC70 specifically to pull the caravan and take the dogs. I have just ordered a Lintran Voyager 2000 Box. I have had one of these before and I know they fit perfect. The Voyager has the considerable advantage that it is a totally enclosed box. Inevitably the Spaniels (especially) are filthy when they get in and (also inevitably) shake just before settling down. The box contains all of this. I have also covered the rear tailgate trim in clear polythese to try and further contain the muck. Highly recommended. I would also fully endorse the comment that dogs like their own space. When we are away caravannning they are very happy to settle down in "their" box. I also adopt the practice that the dogs are never "punished" while in their space. This helps reinforce the feeling of safety they get when in their space. Having had dogs for the past 20 years I would never consider carrying one in a saloon car. Dogs make cars dirty, even with my arrangement I have to valet the inside every week to keep it anywhere near tidy. I would advise some care when introducing the dog to the car, don't start with a 100 mile trip! Try to allow the dog to become accustomed to the car by sitting in its space on the drive (or wherever). Feed treats at first. Try to convinvce the dog this is a safe and a pleasant place to be. This will avoid untold anguish later. Good luck.

A wagon or hatchback is more convenient for transporting dogs, but a saloon is useable and might actually be safer for the dog. The seat back would restrain the dog should your vehicle be hit in the rear.
I know several people who transport a dog or several dogs in saloons.
