Default Battery and alternator

Here we go again. Today, I installed the radio, there was no amp (yippe) so that was easy with a bit of trial and error. Four speakers and all intact, would you believe it. However, the car won't start and this is because of a dead battery. Started it with jump leads. The car ran fine when I first got it but yesterday, it was difficult to start, like weak battery, and now nothing happenes. The radio, windows and central locking all work fine, however. The volt gauge has always indicated a healty 13 volt so in theory the alternator should be fine. Could the volt gauge be wrong and the alternator gone or is the battery so old and used that it does no longer accept charge?

George

Default RE: Battery and alternator

Make sure that the battery is fully charged. Disconnect the battery overnight. Reconnect in the morning and see how well it cranks. If it behaves well then you have a current drain when engine is off. You will probably find that the alternator is faulty (reverse current protection diode is short circuit). If it still misbehaves then change the battery.

All the best, Peter.
