Default Automatic Gearbox

I own a 760 Turbo petrol 230ET 1989 with 145000 miles on the clock which I use for towing. After a recent caravan holiday I have noticed that when first starting my car will not change up through the gears for about 200 yards, when it reaches 3500 revs it then changes and for the rest of the day behaves quite normally in every respect. Can anyone advise please.

Just a guess here but a couple of things come to mind. One is the correct grade of oil in the box as the symptoms sound very similar to power steering on a cold morning. It takes time for the oil to flow and warm up. Is there a filter that needs changing? Lastly is there a valve which is sticking when cold? PS silly point is there enough oil in the box !!!! from recollection you check auto oil levels with the engine running (check your manual , the book that is not the box !!!) Cheers Nigel

Thanks for the information
I have checked the oil and the level is right.since I entered this query I have arranged for the car to be inspected by a specialist his first thoughts are the sticking valve, though another so called specialist given the same information said that it was metal in the box which would require a complete re build, I wont tell you what he wanted to charge, I'll leave you to guess.

Just a thought but the transmission fluid (ATF) should be changed every 30,000miles for 200, 400, 700 and 900 models according to the Volvo Service Programme.

All the best, Peter.

Thanks for the advice, I have had the gearbox checked by a specialist and a governor has been replaced. Hopefully it has now been sorted

I dont quite understand what you mean ( I'm a bit thick that way ) but unhappily the problem is still there so it would appear that it was not the governor. I start it in 2nd gear and find it changes up easier. Once it has, the gearbox then behaves normally. Now I'm stuck.

One assumes that you have changed the oil on this box, if not, you need to do it pretty quick.

The symptons described are very reminiscent of overheated oil problems, which will lead to more expensive issues if you don't get it swopped.

perhaps an extra gearbox cooler rad might be a good idea too?

Thanks for that, but I took it to a alleged gearbox specialist in sept..Thats when he did the gov, etc. I also have an extra oil cooler fitted. I found that after a few days of starting it in 2nd gear it went back to normal and I can now start driving in drive and it behaves, that is until the next time I put the van on the back, then I presume it will do it again.
cheers briber

Sorry, I don't check this forum very often so I hadn't noticed your reply, Briber.

The governor only controls wide open throttle shift (somewhere past 6000rpm) so he shouldn't have wasted your money on that.
I he hasn't changed the oil and filter, go to another "specialist" and have them do it.
Otherwise I don't really know. Worn out pump??
