Default S40 Cylinder Head gasket???

I have a very sorry S40 1.9TD 1998 manual sitting in my drive.

It drives great - best car I've ever had. Last week however the car temperature light came on just as I arrived at work. Before I left work I filled up the expansion tank to the max line. Didn't take much at all. Drove about for another week - no further problems - forgot all about it.

Then I noticed a wee spot of oil on my brand new monoblock! Opened up the bonnet to have a look and there seemed to be oil everywhere. Including rather a lot near the expansion tank - opened it up and its full of green sludge.

The car stills drives fine, not overheating, nothing to suggest anything untoward.

Took it to the garage he undid the hose into the radiator and there was oil there. He tried to flush it no success, reckons its definetley Cylinder Head Gasket and will be minimum £500, but who knows once they start taking it apart. I have not gone ahead with the repairs because I have no chance of getting this money back on it.

The expansion tank is now seeping oil out of the top. Not a happy bunny.

Anyone with any know-how reckon it is the gasket and have any words of consolation to help me in losing my bestest car.

Phew!!!

Decided to take your advice, went to Halfords, but no owners manual for the diesel S40. They say there is not one - hats that all about.

Does anyone know if such a thing exists and has anyone ever chnged a head gasket???

http://freespace.virgin.net/al.fonzo...-some-info.pdf

this is all i could find, its got some specific info in there but not a complete procedure, presumably because its a job which is the same on most cars, so would be well known to a mechanic.

if youve not replaced a head gasket before then .....

basically follow any head gasket replacement procedure for any car & you wont go far wrong.

if you get stuck , mail me

take stuff off thats in the way,
label anything you take off if you think your not going to remember where it go's
taking photo's will help
before you remove the cambelt make sure you lock the flywheel & camshaft sprocket
get gasket kit from GSF or eurocarparts or the like
fit a new cam belt whilst your there

the procedure will be in the haynes B.O. lies, even if your car isnt listed, it wont be much different + you'll have all the torque settings to hand for the other bits youve taken off

& get someone to help you take the head off, its probably gonna be fairly heavy.

any specific question, holla
