My ongoing saga with my 850R took a turn for the worse today.

It all started just before Christmas when basically it froze up the coolant and we had a core plug pop in the turbo.

Took the turbo off to fix that and put back together.

When you started it there was 'steam' coming out of the back so diagnosed cracked head. I tried some Barrs which seemed to help as the steam stopped and I thought I had rescued the car.

However today after driving about 2 miles there was an absolute 'steam engine' load of oily smelling white smoke coming out of the back , which I suppose is the turbo?

I think my car will be up for sale by the end of the weekend.

Its costing too much now and I do have another anyway.

Just one question, if the re is massive cloud of oily smelling white smoke is that the turbo or could a cracked head still give that effect?

Thanks

White smoke/steam is the engine burning coolant so it could be the head.

Would that not smell of boiling water as this smells like burning oil?

If its just the head then I feel a lot better all ready!

As George said ..its DEFFO the head (had the same wiv my Merc E240, Sold it on Flea Bay & thought I'd take it fer a wash for the new owner ...Half way down the main A580 .. WHOOSH!! Oil, Steam Water everything ....

I tell you what 1000 times better than Barrs ..... IRONTITE .. I used it on several Discoveries / Range Rovers & general V8 engines ....My old Discovery 1 is STILL goin today (Must be 4 years since I "Irontited" it) ...

Damn fine bit of kit is that !!!

I have something I bought a year ago called Steel Seal which I haven't used but thats going in this weekend.

Do these 'sealers' not gum up the waterways and so cause an overheating problem while they are sorting an overheating problem.?

Yer "Average DIY'er" Sealers do tend to ..but Irontite is the "Higher" end of the market..

With Irontite you put it in Run the engine up to temp leave it in fer 24 hours then DRAIN IT OUT AGAIN then refill with water/Antifreeze mix ...It puts a chemical "Lining" on/in the water ways & Head Gasket ..

Linky>>>> http://www.irontite.com/ Read ALL the Docs on that site you'll see how it DOES NOT "Gum up" the water ways or Expansion tanks ect .....(There is some EXTREMELY useful info contained within them Documents on there!!)

Personally MY method is to use BOTH sealants ....I use the "Ceramic Sealant" first Leave it fer 24 hours & then Flush it out then when refilling put in the "All Weather" sealant just fer good measure...

As I said before I KNOW this method works coz my old V8 Disco is STILL running around 4 YEARS & 45 K miles LATER !!!!

Just to re visit this thread (as I've just found it), it was the turbo that was knackered, it had snapped the shaft in the turbo and had poured the contents of the sump into the exhaust.
