The sealant should be spread over the entire mating surfaces with a short haired one inch diameter paint roller this will produce a very thin even film , If you dab loads on it WILL find its way into oil feed holes and block them . You are using the volvo liquid gasket i hope? Because its not just sealant it is a certain strong Loctite adhesive which bonds the cover on strengthening the head ..
