Diff ratio/ axle size ?

Hi folks, would anyone here know the lowest ratio diff available from the 740 940 range. I need to replace the axle in my old rover coupe as parts are no longer available and having been a Volvo fan for years and had 7 940's I know they are good reliable units to use. I'm not entirely sure the overall sizes would be suitable so maybe someone would have the dimensions as well.

The Volvo rear ends sure are strong...the 1/4 mile guy's and tractor pull chaps used to use em for their strength...

Speaking of 940's Axles...

Auto box axles are;

ZF 3,73:1
AW 4,10:1

M90 Manual box cars;

3,54:1 and B230FK engined cars 3,31:1

I believe that another upgrade option for the P5 (albeit harder to find) is to use a Jensen CV8 axle. This comes with limited slip diff and disc brakes as standard; it's high geared and strong (speced for the Jensen's Chrysler 6.3 V8) and has the advantage of being the correct PCD and centre-bore for the Rover's lovely rostyle wheels.

Thanks John, I have been searching for one for a while, but thought the volvo route would be easier to find, certainly would make life easy if i could get a jensen axle though.

3.73 and 3.91 are the auto diff ratios .

4.1 may be found in early 240 estates , although if u have money anything canbe bought from sverige

Hi,

I had a 240 axle (narrowed) in a Ford Pop with a Rover V8 in it. First I had a autobox in it (Borg Warner 65), I then pulled that out and fitted an SD1 manual 5 speed.

Both worked very well, I had no problems even though it was driven very hard. Now, I was only making about 250hp but I know a few drag racers that had 400hp through these axles without problems.

From memory, I think it was 3.73 ratio which gave good aceleration but meant I ran out of revs (esp with the manual box). I think at a red-line 5750 I was doing about 105mph, which suited me fine for a small wheelbase 'twitchy' car like the Pop.

You can def get limited slip diffs for these axles.

Thanks, very interesting site. The rover engine is only about 160 bhp so theres no issue with the strength of the volvo axle, it's the diff ratio i'm interested in, at the moment it's 3.54 and the engine runs at about 2k RPM at 50 MPH. There was a company doing 2,83 ratio for early range rovers that would do me fine but they no longer manufacture.

I was hoping the volvo range would have something similar as i recall my 940 engine would run at 2k rpm at around 70 mph but thinking about it it was 4 speed auto probably overdrive.
