Default Key fobs

My father has remote central locking on his 1996 945. He has two fobs but one does not work.

We have a spare fob from a completely different car, can this spare fob be used to replaced our duff one. Our local volvo dealer told us that through a series of ignition key turning between positions one and two you can get it to recognise the new fob. How ever, I am not sure that this won't just cause the car to only recognise the other fob instead.

Obviously we want it to recognise both the fobs. can this be done?

Default Fobs

Yes it can quite easily, if the spare fob is the correct frequency to match your car. Instructions are in the hand book. Before you start make sure when you press the button on the fob it makes a tiny squeek.Listen to the good fob to know what your looking for, you will probably find the new fob has poor batteries. The fobs recognise the car.

The fob came from another 1996 945 which was exactly the same spec. The fobs are the same configuration.

Will give it a go. Almost can't believe its that easy. (shouldn't have said that) LOL

The alarm should remember 4 fobs. I am not sure what happens when you try the fifth.

The squeak is a red herring. Mine is silent and I managed to program it to my new car.

For instructions see the GPL1968's link in this thread:

They do work but its easy to get it wrong.

It's a simple job.
You have to program all your key fobs in sequence.
Turn the ignition on/off four times.
Turn the ignition on again, the led on the l/h dashboard speaker grille will begin flashing rapidly.
Press the lock/unlock button on the first key fob. The led will stay on for two seconds and then revert to flashing.
Within ten seconds repeat the sequence for all your other key fobs.
Turn the ignition off.
Job done.

Default In a nut shell!

gpl1968's reply is short, concise and comprehensive and much easier to follow than the instructions I recieved with the last fob I bought. Thank you.

I just (10 mins ago) found this out as I programmed my new fob.
The Volvo instructions are ambiguous. It appears you don't have to do the switch on four times bit more than once.

What I didn't test was if you need to programme you old one in again. It was easier just to press it again.

What was funny was how loud the central locking actuators are, or rather the cluck as they operate. Its like a cell door slamming (or so I am led to believe. )

Yes, sorry if it wasn't clear. Once the led on the speaker grille is flashing, you don't turn the ignition off until all the fobs have been programmed

All your fobs have to be programmed at the same time.
Any fobs you don't program at that time will be forgotten by the alarm.

So to re-cap:

1, Turn the ignition on/off four times.
2, Turn the ignition on again, the LED on the l/h dashboard speaker grille will begin flashing rapidly.
3, Press the lock/unlock button on the first key fob. The LED will stay on for two seconds and then revert to flashing.
4, Within ten seconds repeat step 3 for ALL your other key fobs.
5, Turn the ignition off.
