Default wheel bearings

Hello all
looking for some advice.
have a 06 d5 93k on the clock, last night heard a noise coming from passenger side rear area. worse at higher speeds. ? wheel bearings,
Qs 1. how does one diagnose the problem
2. if it is how far is it safe to drive and at what speed, was planning a round trip of about 800 mile over the coming week, just wondering if its safe or not. cant get to garage before we leave. If not safe will need to squeeze into my other car A4 avant instead. Rather go in the beast though
thanks for your thoughts/experiences on the matter

whining noise = bearing
Noise + vibration = at a particular speed range = track rod ball joint
Vibration + clunking = lower ball joints
Poor handling = drop link or control arm.

Armed with the above go for a drive and then jack the suspect corner and check for play in each bush

Maths lesson over :-)

I am changing out my track rods in a couple of weeks. They cost £20 each from ECP or £44 from Volvo. I need to get myself a 20mm crows foot spanner to undo the lock nut first.

There are some excellent videos on YouTube showing how to tell what has failed
