Default re-tension cambelt at regular intervals?

hi
I'm in the process of replacing my waterpump (940 se turbo 2.3 1994/5) and noticed (as the timing upper cover is removed ) that theer is a small amount of play on longest run of cam belt (1/2 inch or so). should i loosen and retighten tensioner to take up any slack? the belt was replaced 10,000 miles ago and i dont think it has ever been retensioned.
thanks
R

HI,

Your tensioner may be going/gone south as it should maintain tension in the belt.

I would change that and get the belt re-tensioned.

Part of the first service was to slacken the nut and tighten it to retension the belt but that was it for the life of the belt , your play may have just been the way the engine stopped, ie rotated backwards a touch before coming to rest ...

with a spring to set the tension and then clamped to be a fixed tensioner it has got to go slack with use due to the belt sitting lower on the pulleys and a very slight stretch,i used to slack my clamp bolt off each year to let it take any slack up

Wink Play?

What exactly do you mean by play. You push it and it moves?

My car is a similar era and has a sprung tensioner, so there is no slack, but pushing the belt can compress the spring. The spring is very stiff indeed and so I think 1/2" sounds too much.

If there is no tension in the belt you risk slipping a tooth and wrecking the engine so some urgency to confirm or rectify is required.

Yes at regular intervals slacken and retighten the nut. 8-10000miles or 1000 miles initially after fitting new belt
