"Courtesy Car" or "Hire Car"
My local Volvo Dealer now charge £10.00 for the use of a "courtesy car". When I questioned the legality of this, 'ie' in my insurance it states that you are not covered for vehicles hired or loaned to you under a seperate hire purchase agreement, they said the charge was to cover insurance costs incurred by the garage. However, if I am driving their car on my fully comp insurance, their car is covered, albieit third party only. You guessed it......this wasn't good enough.
My advice to anyone who comes up against this is to ask your insurance company to insure you fully comp for one day on the "courtesy car" and fax a covering letter to the dealer. Hopefully they may oblige for no extra charge. You can then tell the dealer to shove the £10.00 charge. What next? Charging £1.00 a go to look around the showroom, or £5.00 to drive onto the forcourt! They should be grateful that people with cars over 3 years old still use their service department. In the last two years I have had my car, I've spent over £2000.00 pounds getting it from the semi-neglected state it was in, to something half decent. If I could go to another dealer, or a private volvo specialist who were as conveniently placed I would. Another money making scam. They make me sick!!!!! |

RE: "Courtesy Car" or "Hire Car"
It is likely to be possible to get your own insurer to cover you for the loan car, but it my not be any cheaper due to the charges some insurers are now making.
My girlfriend has just changed cars. She notified her insurer in plenty of time, and requested a cover note so the dealer could tax the vehicle and she could pick it up. They failed to send the docs out, so she had to arrange to collect the car another day. This morning she received her paperwork, and discovered that her insurer had charged her £15 'admin fee' for a change of vehicle for one day; following their error, they charged her another £15 for changing again, plus £1.64 for sending copy documents, even though they admit they failed to send the first lot. On the phone they have now agreed to refund the money, but without apology - they say many insurers charge these fees. Needless to say they have now lost a customer. I called my own insurer to ask about loan car cover - they said they would 'probably' do it for nothing. |

If you were insured with VOI, (Volvo Owners Insurance) then there is no extra charge, and you are covered full comp with the loan car. When we are shopping around to get our insurance a few quid cheaper, we tend to forget about the perks included on the slightly higher premium, ie no excess on windscreens, full cover abroad etc etc.

And they even send you a cover note which turns up in the post a day or two later.

That's a lot of perks! |

Yes. They quoted me £1400.00 ish, and the girl on the end of the phone had the cheek to ask me "How does that compare with your other quotes?" I said "You're about £1000 .00 over the mark."......Deathly silence followed. I then went back to Norwich Union Direct for a much more pallateable £465.00 (And yes it does have all the PERKS)
At this point I should hasten to add that I'm not a young boy racer, having held my full UK driving licence since 17.Dec.83 |

I forgot to add, the premium I am paying with VOI for my V70 'R' AWD with all mods disclosed is £382 full comp protected.

How do you get insurance this cheap... I'll admit that I've only had my lisence since '94 but full no claims, + 3 accidents in 2 years protected earnt, not paid for and the still wanted 500gbp for a 1980 Spitfire limited to 4500 miles... And it was my only car not my second.
Changed to another company for 70gbp (TSSC Member) 110gbp without being a TSSC member! And NUD told me I was lying to them. Well done though! Stu |

Stu,
you only get insurance this cheap when the insurance companies can see that you've been ripped off every year for twenty years. They then feel so sorry for you that they lower your premium to a slightly more acceptable figure. Sorry I can't give you a more positive answer. Scouse. |

A quick note of caution to everyone. If you get a cheap quote online that is gauranteed for 'xyz' days make sure you get a print out of the quote. I had a eight month battle with the RAC to get them to honour the original quote (which I won :) )
