Default volvo 940 celebration clutch issue?.. help!

Hi there,my wifes just a volvo nut so when we saw an R plate 940 celeb on monday she couldn't resist and bought it even though she couldn't afford..
Today her clutch pedal dropped to the floor and the car stalled, after pumping the pedal it came back up and she managed to drive her dad back from the hospital to his house and then home..on the the test i'd noticed the pedal was biting at the very bottom of the pedal (near the floor) but she loved the car and bought it regardless..
Can someone please help? Whats the problem and how much would it cost to resolve?.. she's had the car since monday and her complete glee has turned to utter sadness and distrust of her new baby..
She's gutted..

Try bleeding it, there's a bleed nipple on top of the slave cylinder. If not that it's possibly seal failure in slave or master cylinder. My pedal stays on the floor occasionally but if I hook it up with my foot its ok again. Its booked in next week to have it sorted, garage, Volvo independant, reckons its the slave cylinder. Don't give up on it they're cracking cars.
Hope this helps
Pete.

Many thanks for the reply, we'll figure out where the bleed nipple is and hit it with said pointy stick!.. at least there's hope, once again thankyou muchly.

Have exactly the same problem with my 940 celebration. It happens on a completely random basis but so far it seems to happen away from home, It may be coincidence or perhaps when car has warmed up. Hasnt done it when driving only on restarting car after travelling a few miles or more. The pedal hits the floor as though theres no hydraulic fluid at all. It then seems to slowly come back up. It happened to my partner last week and she said she heard a sort of gurgling sound as it came back. Local volvo garage reckons to be master cylinder or slave cylinder. I changed flexi hose first as its the cheapest option. Heard of hoses collapsing from time to time. Hasn't done it since but time will tell. Hope you get it sorted.

I had this happen on my 1992 940 earlier on in the year.
I think it has something to do with the fluid needing replaced as once I bled the system it hasn't reoccured.

Sounds amazing but with so many people saying it was the hydraulics it may be your problem as well.

Year before last my GLE and I where on an important errand when I lost the clutch and had to be towed to my favourite mechanic.

Turned out the flexible pipe was leaking, not oil out, but air in!! The experienced but boggling mechanic would bleed it, then it would go again. The solution was simply a new hose. Pretty cheap.

Conversely I should add that as you have no idea how long the biting point was disappearing through the floor we have no idea if the clutch has been dying for years. The vendor is probably dancing on the tables by now.

However the quick test is to change the hose, maybe one hour and £20 for the part. If its the clutch then half a day - £200? because rear drive cars are a doddle to do.

On a positive note to finish I thought my clutch was a bit weak when I bought my GLE, I could get it to slip if I pulled away quickly in third. (I was new to it). Seven years later at 220,000 miles it was still fine.
