Default rear clunk when applying brake

Hi
I've got v70 (2.4 auto, X reg 2000) and when I press the brake pedal there is a clunk in somewhere towards the rear nearside wheel. I'd hazard a guess it being something like a brake pad jumping into place, but I'm new to this car and therefore thought I'd ask before taking in apart. Also the handbrake is terrible! Other than that the brakes work well.

I've not consulted the Haynes yet but will at some point this week, but any advice you guys would be great

Thanks
Rob

Morning.

As you all suggested the lining of the shoes had indeed left the drums. I've now fixed this with a new set of pad's and shoes on the back end.

The problem is that I still get the clunk when using the foot brake. And I think I've heard it from the front too. If I use the hand brake while the car is rolling I get no noise so it has to be the calliper/pad assembly, right?

Later this week I was going to clean the callipers again and make sure the slide the pad moves on is clean, but any other advise or thoughts would be great.

Thanks

Hi - mine does that too and I apologise that I don't know the technical terminology of these certain parts, but I'll try to explain myself as best as I can!

You have the caliper and the bit that attaches to the hub that the grooves of each pad sits on and in a way, slides on. I'll refer to them as brake pad guides, for want of a better expression. Well, you need to make sure that those are nice and clean and that the pads move freely along the guides.

I ended taking each off of each corner, whacking each into a vice and having a really good go at cleaning them up with a wire brush and a very (VERY) fine file to get rid of all residue. Then with each new pad, I cleaned up each groove - I was surprised at how restrictive the very thick paint was. Finally, each groove was smeared with copper grease and rechecked that the pad could slide freely along the guides before putting everything back together on the car.

Would you agree that it is less of a clunk and more like a click? Comes form each corner of the car, not necesarily at the same time?

I first noticed I had a problem when, apart from the 'click', not all of one of the pads was coming into contact with the disc (new pads, new discs) and there was a ring of rust on the inner diameter of the disc. On further investigation I found the pad was slighlty on the wonk because of these manky guides.

I must admit that a year later, there's some noise again. So I might have to have another clean up down there...

Did read in the attached that there's a clunk noise when pulling off that is the abs position sensors - don't know if that might be something else to consider

I was interested to read in your original post that the handbrake was terrible. Do you still find it bad even though you have fitted new parts? You do have to give the handbrake a pretty good yank to make it work - constant concern from my wife - and it always rolls back a disconcerting 1cm before locking up properly

Hi. Thanks for that.

I'd say it's a clunk, but maybe a clicky clunk...

Yes I still have to pull the hand brake hard to get it to work, but as it's an automatic it's not a major problem.

I'll take some time to clean the callipers then and let you know how I get on.

Thanks
Rob

just a thought but have you made sure your anti rattle springs are in correct, check your manual for guidance or look up various threads on this forum,i know it may seem a bit obvious but if they are not in correct they do give problems.

AS it happens I did have a look them, thinking that they could be the problem. I used the Haynes to give me a clear(ish) picture and they seem to be correct.

But I'll check again, thanks.
