+1 - you can weld with a 12v battery (although I've never tried it).
If it is allowed to short out (say the + wire is touched on the bodywork) it can quickly weld itself to the body eliminating fast disconnection.
Exploding batteries are not fun...

OUCH!

So, When they go to a 100 Amp Alternator, did the change the Battery?

The one in my '93 940 sedan is a dinky little thing, but seems to do the job,,,mostly.

Looks like the B230 had a 100a unit back to 1992 and the B200's were on 80a at that time...

A useful website is http://www.woodauto.com/vehicle.aspx
Can't vouch for its accuracy, but seemed to be correct for my '91 945GLE when I got a recon Bosch alternator last year. Not necessarily the cheapest prices though.

Hi,

Yes.. My battery was originally a 65a one..

When I had problems last year (turned out to be the alternator!) I replaced it with a 85a battery....
I like to have a bit more amperage to fall back on....

i have! works well for spot welding.. wouldn't want to try seam welding with it however!

Hi all,
My first post here and I'm sure it won' be my last.

My problem is currently parked up about a mile from my house due to losing all power in the battery, so before I go and buy myself a new alternator or whatever, I would like some advice:

Over last couple days I've been getting a very dim battery light come on, together with at least two more warning lights that are even dimmer. The battery light and others come on directly after I start the engine, but would sometimes go back out again if I gave it some high revs. Unfortunately, the high revs workaround no longer worked and therefore broke down a mile from home wih a flat battery.

Does his sound like it's the alternator, and if so, do I need to get a new alternator or will new bushes do the trick?

Vehicle Details:
VOLVO 940 SE TURBO 1991

Thanks for reading, and I hope someone can help me.

PDQ.

Hi,

Might be the alternator but it could also be your instrument panel.

Your car doesn't charge with out the instrument panel so some faults on the panel can reflect itself in your charging.
It would be worth pulling the panel and checking the plastic circuit board for cracks and broken lines.
Also worth checking the amount of current you get at the battery when running.

2nd hand alternators are easy enough to come by and aren't that expensive...

My car (1992 940S) has had similiar symptoms this weekend. I dosconnected the red cable from the back of the alternator, started the car, and then measured it to ground, and was getting sweet FA. Turns out that one of the brushes on the voltage regulator was completly worn out, so was no longer making contact, and therefore breaking the circuit = no charge. Still looking for a new one now, as one direct from Volvo was £47 :-O Anyone know any Volvo Breakers anywhere in Yorkshire?

Default Alt problem?

Hi, guys
just read the threads re alternator problems so here is a problem I was faced with re a new battery apprex two years ago.
Having replaced an old battery for a new one on a 960 I had similar problems as above on start up. I returned to the shop and the "shop sales person" checked the new battery and tried to convince me it was ok.
Whilst I was insisting on a new battery a "Bosch salesman" who was in the shop at the same time asked if he could check the battery with his own tester and after the test established that more than one of the new battery cells was down.
I was immediately given a new Bosch battery as replacement.
This salesman went on to say that there were some thousand batteries being recalled (worldwide) due to manufacturing problems in Africa
I think the moral of this thread is check everything out before replacing
