Clan - is the speed at which the torque converter locks up programmable? I've always felt it doesn't lock up soon enough for my liking, languishing in high revs before there's some usable power, especially for the kind of roads I drive (A's mainly over the Peaks). I tend to drive in 'manual' mode a lot in the hilly stuff because of it, as it can be 'persuaded' into lockup a lot easier. There's some solid grunt in the D5 that you just can't get to use otherwise.

Not programmable by anyone other than the factory . if it came in any earlier the Engine rpm would be too low to generate the power required to drive the car efficiently . The clutch only locks up when you are lightly cruising as it cant take the full torque of the engine , as soon as you press the throttle pedal it will let go ... and come back when you are lightly cruising again if you are over 60 mph .

In answer to the cost of an exchange gearbox .. about £3500 ..

Thanks Clan. So if it only locks up when lightly crusing, what is the sensation of extra power, much like a solid manual clutch, when you accelerate in 'manual' 3 or 4 up a hill? The revs are high initially with not much go, then there comes a point when the revs drop, seemingly like changing gear and it pulls like a train until you need to change up ?

that could be normal low rpm slip in the torque converter until the rpm raises then you get more of a solid drive , a torque converter slips about 95% ar idle and at high rpm about 10% slip .

Well had to fit new gearbox as while towing got the old problem of limp mode and transmittion service required new box locks in at 53 MPH (old one 61MPH) so improvement.
Did not get 10% discount on parts from Lloyds Carslile as they say not a stock item will be persuing that one as Owners Magazine dosn't say that (£4084) total bill

I have a 53 plate geartronic and i also get the extra gear change when in manual or auto and the gear number stays the same also once i have been above around 50m.p.h my gearbox seems to look and there is less slip on the revs/torque converter i wasn't sure if this was right
