Hi there lyron

I gave my V70 TDI an "Essential Service" (160K Mile) which includes changing the cam belt, pump and auxiliary belts for £450 inc VAT all in. I added tensioners which only added a few pounds to the total bill.

I had all of this done at the main dealer which is Kastner in Exeter, which is local to me and was very impressed. I must admit it was the first time I'd ever been to a main dealer, for anything other than a browse.

Check out the "Essential Service" here. It should be available at any main dealer on any Volvo more than 6 years old.

Incidentaly, I was quoted well over £600 pounds for the cam belt, aux belts pump and all tensioners to be changed alone, from a local indy in Devon.

Hope this helps. I just thought it might be a cost effective way forward for you.

Cheers,

Dan

thankyou for your input.i have just been in touch with previous owners garage.who have stated that they changed both belts at 96000 mls.but cannot remember if they did the water pump.that was 2years ago.and the mileage is now 108000. silly question but is it possible to change water pump without too much hassle.bearing in mind i will be having the belts done as finances permit.lyron.

I think you know the answer to this one...
If you are changing the pump and the belt needs to come off, then replace the belt....

In Aug 08 I paid MRG Chippenham about £650 for both belts, w/pump, tensioners, crank bolt, crank seal and pump timing. This was 160k belt change. Includes coolant. Of this, labour was about £360 so it "cost" me £360 if you follow. I usually do all my own work (740 cambelt no problem) and thought long and hard about doing it myself but I know I'd have struggled with the crank bolt, plus the camshaft pulley is not keyed - you have to know how to set it. Also, the belt tension has to be correct, not too tight as well as not too loose. You can't time an MSA15.8 managed diesel pump without a VCT2000 so that would have cost me say £50 anyway. MPG and performance definitely improved afterwards.

If you're competent AND have good tools, including the crank locking tool, then do it but others on here e.g. Clan (who knows this engine) insist it's a specialist job and I recognise that. If the tdi engine has a cambelt failure the camshaft usually breaks in two (or three) and a valve or two bends. So you have to know exactly what you're doing. Regards.
