Default Speed camera detection question

Probably the wrong forum for this question but the General forum will attract too many of the 'speed kills' brigade.

My daily route to work takes me past Castle Combe race circuit.
It was Superbike weekend yesterday and today and of course the speed camera vans were out in force catching the 'criminals'.
I use a Snooper SLD920 laser jammer and S6R Neo detector neither of which were activated by a camera van that I passed at 30 in the 40 zone ;).

The question is is should they have detected the camera. Does anyone know how the cameras work? Are they active or passive?

The Ford RS owners day saw four camera vans positioned around the roads leading to the circuit. Come Monday morning there were none. You can't tell me they are not revenue gatherers.
GGggggrrrrrrrr.

Hi Andy,

AFAIK, the camera vans are active in that they use either radar or laser in their detection and therefore should have activated your devices. However, the coppers controlling them might only switch the radar or laser signals on when they want to "shoot" someone. As you were only doing 30 the coppers in the back of the van will have recognised you were under the limit and not bothered to pull the trigger. I don't know for sure but it's a possibility.

Besides, don't the vans clock the front of vehicles? If that's the case then they're pretty useless for motorbikes.

Regards

Andy

Perhaps the cameras in the van were checking for valid tax discs on display in the windscreen. In which case they wouldn't need radar or laser (I think!).

Hi,

I have an S5-R and have noticed the same thing. There are a lot of speed camera vans where I live in North Wales, and they never seem to trigger it either.

Weird...

ok, but they could use that optical character recognition stuff and read my number plate, then i wouldn't have to have a tax disc in my window.

not that it annoys me or anything, i mean having to take all the paper work with you, like i'm gonna tax someone elses car !

( ok, there is probably a perfectly good reason for it, but i still dont like it )

It's basically the one opportunity to check each year that vehicles are correctly registered, insured and MoT'd. Not foolproof but better than nothing given the distinct (and frankly ridiculous)lack of traffic police on the roads.

It is perfectly possible to automate the system as is done in Belgium.
