Default Water Pump Replacement - Gasket Question

Just a quick question on preparing the mating surfaces when you are replacing a gasket (in particular this applies to the water pump which I am currently working on).

Once you have removed the actual hardened gasket itself you are often left with some of the blue/greeny residue from the gasket. Does this need to be cleaned off and the surface made perfectly clean before refitting the new gasket? If so what is the best way of doing this?

I've used a gasket scraper but I think you need to be careful not to dig scratches into the metal with this.

The Haynes manual mentions using "Hydraulic Sealing Compound" on the bolts but I have never heard of this. Anyone know about this ?

Any tips much appreciated.

Andy.

Default water pump gasket

It's a good idea to remove it use a stanley blade or similar to remove it without damaging the metal or if you can find it there are liquids designed to remove gaskets.

Sealing compound as far as I know is called Loc-Tite comes in a small bottles and is either blue, red or yellow
