There's a T peice valve on the bonnet itself, usually red. They go faulty. Available cheaply from Volvo.

This is what the T connection that ShadeTek is talking about.

You can find it here.

When you press the button, do you here the pump running? If not, it may be the pump itself which you can find here.

Had similar problem a while back and tried cleaning filter with no success. Worked fine when I replaced filter with new item. Have you tried disconecting tube from filter (pump side) and then trying washers to see if pump works?

Unhappy 850 washer pump

Thanks everyone for the answers. However, what happened: The jets, headlamps and windscreen all stopped working at the same time. Though you can hear the pump whir.

I took the washer filling funnel out and after lacerating my forearm managed to get the filter off. The motor of the pump whirs but there is no response from the pipe which I presume comes out of the washer tank(the feed side to the little filter) I have a replacement pump, used but guaranteed, although I think the one in situ is working. Haynes Manual says: To remove the pump just use long nose pliers and pull it out and fit the new one. I think the tank may be crudded up and thought to flush it out and clean the pump or replace it but I am nervous of starting something I cannot finish. A local garage says they will need to remove the inside wheel arch cover and remove the tank, clean and refit; hours of labour. Unfortunatly I am skint, If I could remove and refit the pump relatively easily, surely I could flush the tank in situ?

Car due for MOT and this I believe is the only issue.

I have had three volvos all used 940, 740, and this 850 all gave good service
All bought cheap due to poverty. any help from you guys gratefull y recieved.

Take the filter off and start the pump to see it water comes out...
The filter could be blocked and need a reverse flush...
Sometimes when mine runs out it can take a bit of fiddling to "purge?" the system..

Thanks Again
I have detatched the filter and cleaned it; I can run water from the tap into the filter both ways, so presume it is not blocked. There is no water coming out of the unnatached pipe that would go into the filter from the pump ( I assume the pipe is coming from the pump ). The pump makes its usual noise so again I am assuming the pump is working. ( I have a guaranteed used one ready in any case).
I am totally bemused: Icannot see why the whole reservoir has to be removed, as the garage mechanic told me. Looking in my Haynes maual, it says: Remove the filler pipe, then using long nose pliers remove the pump from the reservoir. But the reservoir has a mesh filter at the neck and pliers will not go in. I have noticed that just in front of the filler neck there is a connection, that could I suppose be attached to the pump. however the attached article looks white where my replacement is black. Do I just yank this out? I am worried because the aperture surrounding it does not look large enough to allow the the pipe connectors to come through as well.

Again as I said: The garage said they will have to remove the inner wheel arch cover and remove the reservoir, clean and refit. Hours of labour. It is like having to remove the water tank in your house just to replace a tap washer. Sorry Guys, I am dim and impecunious. My last ventures in car mechanics of any degree were in the days of my mark 2 cortina and mark 1 escort, very simple engineering. Until recently company cars protected me from such labours. Now I wish I had done a course on car mainenance and repair. Thanks all for your help; Any more suggestions before I spend the wifes Chrissy present money, bite the bullet and let the garage do it Would be a godsend.
