Default Oil Temp - COLD on 480

Hi

The Oil part of the infocentre on my 480 constantly reads COLD. Even after some enthusiastic and long haul driving. Only this morning though the infocentre said to CHECK. Then the CHECK went off and back to COLD. It hasn't done that before.

I think the Oil Temperature Sensor may have gone or disconnected somehow. But I'm not sure where it's located. Does anyone know where it is so I can either replace it or check it over for loose connections.

Thanks

You'll find the plug to the sensor on the front of the engine, low down, just below and to the right of the oil filter. A black covered wire running down to a square block.

It sounds as if you have just got a loose connection ....hopefully!

You say the Infocentre is saying "CHECK" and has never done that before - the first thing it does is an oil level check when you start, and should say "OK". If everything is working normally "CHECK" means your oil level is low, so in any event I would look at that if I were you. Alternatively the Infocentre will say "CHECK" on a number of functions if there is a fault with that particular sensor - which could include a loose plug.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the reply David. I topped up with oil and it's near the Max mark now. After topping up it still said COLD for about 20 miles. Then I left it overnight and the temperature gauge is working now! Haven't checked the sensor yet so maybe there is a loose connection.

Give it a good service and oil change, it will probably give the sensors a good clean.

It will also read "CHECK" if you park on a hill or incline as the oil has flowed to the back of the sump.
