yes these two belts are changed together which often means the dynamic pump needs setting with the Volvo diagnostic equipment .
It's nearly a 3 hour job . Dont use a non genuine belt , there were problems with the belt on these VW engines when they first appeared in the 850 . Volvo sorted it out for VW so take advantage of their work and use a volvo belt ...

3 hours labour + parts and dynamic pump timing and VAT is likely to be £400 + i guess , it's like 2 cambelt jobs in one with the pump belt and it's timing , its not easy tighening the NEW crank bolts ( 1 x large bolt , 4 smaller allen bolts ) either ..much easier with the volvo tool to lock the crank pulley .

Default Cost

I got a price from the nearest dealer for this and it was £650 including VAT. They didn't include the water pump. Seems they don't automatically replace it. With the water pump and an oil seal it was £750 total. As it happens I didn't end up getting the car.

You might find a VW specialist a bit cheaper . Volvo never change the water pump as part of a service , it has extremeley high quality bearings and seal .Much like the cambelt idler roller .. The tensioner gets changed but not the roller .

My job is coming in aroud the £250 including a waterpump change. The car has now done 160k and i think as a precautionary measure the water pump should be changed. i have used this garage before for our audi A6 avant and they are excellent and very competitive
Incidently the belt wil be changed with all the tensioners at both ends. The garage will be using contitech belts ( Same company as contiental tyres).

Smile V70 tdi fuel pump belt snapped

My 1998 v70 tdi engine suddenly cut out when driving along and would not fire at all when turning over.

Turned out fuel pump belt had snapped on mine, garage suggested would be worth replacing main cambelt as well so had both done along with all tensioners replaced, and crank pulley replaced as these can shear the key off apparently.

Suspect previous owner had had main cambelt done and not had fuel pump belt replaced.

Then 2 days later it sheared the keyway off the crank pulley for some reason and pistons hit valves etc but somehow all valves survived.

garage had injector pump stripped down, but could find nothing wrong (suspected injector pump had siezed) and so replaced crank pulley again.

When got back from the local garage who by now felt out of their depth!, had engine management light come on because of dynamic timing being out but managed to get light to go off and stay off by adjusting both fuel pump tensioner pulleys to swing timing slightly.

it must have cost a fortune , crank pulleys were £250 each when i last changed one . I suspect the end of the crankshaft has been damaged due to an incorectly tightened crank pulley . This means however new the pulley is it will always eventualy come loose again . You didnt say how long the engine had been running without trouble before the pump belt broke .. Its always wise to have there engines serviced correctly and by people experienced in this particular engine . I hope it wasnt you who picked up the bill for the pison valve damage !
