stainless inlet manifold
I know that all the tubes need to be the same length on the exhaust manifold if its made from stainless steel, is this the same with the inlet manifold [I believe they are all the same length but haven't measured yet]
I've got some 2 inch stainless tube hanging around and a welder so was thinking about making an inlet manifold

You would need to do some fancy measurements and welding as you'll need to plum the injectors into it, the throttle body, match inlet ports etc etc.
Would probably be just as easy to buy a polished ported and bored out manifold. Plus the pipes themselves ar smaller than the mixture chamber of the inlet manifold so you would need bigger piping. Stainless steel needs TIG welding too, tungsten inert gas as opposed to MIG welding metal inert gas. |

Intake design is even more complex than exhaust manifold design - it will totally change the way the engine behaves. IIRC, long inlet tracts give you more torque, whereas short tracts give you more top end power (similar to exhaust manifold theory). In fact my Golf V5 has variable length tracts that change according to engine speed, load etc.
Personally I wouldn't try an inlet manifold (but I would take on an exhaust manifold) - you could end up with a very peaky (ie drives well over a limited rpm range) engine after lots of hard graft. BTW You can MIG stainless, but TIG is the better option. I love TIG and think MIG is only good for tacking work - but thats just me You'll need argoshield or pure argon for stainless btw
