Default 740 breakdown

I had to call the RAC out this morning when the 740 suddenly died on me and I couldn't restart it.The RAC guy cranked the engine and saw that the tacho didnt move so he pulled a connector at the back of the dizzy cap and after checking the pins with a meter and getting a spark from the coil when he put some power to the lead said I needed a new distributer.got towed home

just went out to the car and it started first time.
does this seem like a fair diagnosis or looking at the FAQ is the rpm sensor a likely cause.

car is an 88 740 b200E

I could be wrong, but I think the B200E doesnt have a TDC sensor, I'd go with the Ign Moduel as said above, but sounds to me like fuel pump or relay, is there a spark when cranking?

no spark when cranking.rac guy managed to get spark when he put power into the lead he pulled off the dizzy ,which led him to think the connection in the dizzy was faulty .fitted new relay recently .car will cold start, but die after or during hot start.

Power stage/ignition amplifier or hall senor are places to look.
The FAQ cover them. Only thing that has stopped mine.

Default Fuel Relay Socket

It sounds as if your problem is ignition rather than fuel. However, it might be worth checking the fuel relay socket pins. One of these became worn / loose on my 940 causing an intermittent connection with the relay when the car had warmed up. The result was classic fuel relay symptoms - engine dying/stumbling, that persist even when you swap the fuel relay for another.
A loose pin may not be immediately obvious because if other pins have good grip, the relay feels secure. However, wiggling the relay with one's finger with the engine running & warm may stimulate the fault. Then you can check each connector spade with a single spade to find the loose one.
All the best,
Ben

If the tach is dead AND you have no spark it is almost certainly the hall sensor (which is either in the dist. or is an RPM sensor. It is NOT the fuel pump relay - this does NOT inhibit the spark production. Can you hear fuel pump noise momentarily after cranking? If not change the sensor - it should be regarded as a maintenance item anyway after 150k. There's a possibility it could be the Ignition Control Unit but unlikely.

thanks for all the advice.the car is starting first time at the moment as its sitting outside.if i drove it or let it warm up i suspect it would then not restart or cut out.ruled out relay as its new and wiring is ok.

looks like new distributer.cant see the sensor on the bell housing so think it must be integral
