Default To buy or not to buy S60 DS SE Auto - Used

Hi

New to the forum so please excuse etiquette I might have missed.

Currently own an XC90 D5 SE. First Volvo in the family. Like the Volvo so much that I'm about to hand in my company BMW 318 for an S60 D5 SE Auto.

Have tested one and like the similar look and feel to the XC90. Feels much more comfortable than a Beemer.

Looking to buy from a Volvo dealer a used model and prices are ranging from £17K to £19K for one. These will be late 2002 models 02 or 52 plate.

Help required on the following:
1. Is the S60 a good used buy?
2. Is the price fair for a late 2002 model?
3. Anything that I should look out for if I choose to buy (I've read some of the postings in the forum)

Like the new S40/V50 however delivery date is long plus they don't do a Diesel with Auto. What an unusual and sales limiting decision!

Thanks in advance

Ken

Ken,

Welcome to the forums. Will you be joining the Volvo Owners Club too?

I can't comment on whether or not the S60 is a good buy. It certainly looks nice and if the ride is anything like the S80 which Emirates are kind enough to chauffer me to the airport in then it is a very comfortable and refined car indeed (their chauffer firm use S80 D5 autos).

XC90 - Lucky you. Not many of those around - I think Volvo underestimated demand. Did you have to wait long for delivery?

Anyway, on to the point of my post. Have you not considered buying privately or from an independent? The reason I ask is that you'll surely be paying way over the odds for the privilege of buying from a fancy schmancy showroom with free coffee. A late 2002 car will have well over a years manufacturers warranty remaining regardless of where you buy it from (providing of course it's been serviced according to Volvo's recommendations). To me, the only peace of mind that buying from a dealer gives is that you benefit from the warranty. With a nearly new car you get this peace of mind anyway.

Just a thought. And happy Volvo hunting.

Regards

Andy

Hi Andy

Thanks for your time.

Will look to join the owners club soon.

XC90 took a year to arrive. It seemed like forever but the end car was worth the wait. Well at least the wife thinks so as she drives it mainly.

Have looked at buying privately but very little around. Just checked AutoTrader and there is only 2 within 100 miles. All at dealer prices. So...........

Thanks for your opinions

Regards

Ken

My personal opinion is that to pay between 17 and 19K for a S60 D5 may be a bit steep but I suppose it depends on the numbe of extras. Perhaps by mentioning there is a known documented hesistation problem with the auto box you may get a bit of a discount. At present volvo are working to rectify this problem and a fix has been brought out for the S80 and XC90 T6s.

Well - Finally decided to buy a new model. Found a company on the web that were offering discounts unmatched by dealers.

Waiting for it to arrive now.

Thanks to all who replied
