Default S80 engine rattle

Hello
I own a 00 Volvo S80, 2.4 petrol that has done 49,000 miles and has been serviced by the main dealer, this problem originally started a 35,000 miles .
During normal acceleration I can hear a rattle or heavy pinking coming from what seems the bottom of the engine, (it can only be heard with the window down). My Volvo dealer says there is nothing that can be done as it is a known fault with the engine management system and that it will not cause any damage, and suggested I try using super unleaded, which I have, and after 14,000 miles worth, it has not made any difference. I wrote to Volvo UK who contacted the dealer and the only extra piece of information I received back was that this sort of thing could be expected from a car of this age and mileage.
Any ideas what it could be, or if as they say it will not cause any damage.
Thank you

What a load of boll**** from the crap dealer.
IF this is (as they say) a known fault then why can't they do something about it?.
Anything like this with these modern wonderful computer controlled engines is easily altered via the computers.
That's progress they say ,I should ring a few other dealers and see what they say.
Just because the main dealer has looked after it doesn't mean it's been done right.
Half these places have youths (cheap labour) doing all the donkey work and the 'technicians sat on their arses.

I totally agree with vaughan here,
These type of main dealers employ halfwits to do the work while technicians as vaughan says sit on their arses,
I did a two week work experience from school in a local rover mg dealership, quite big.
After the first day they had me servicing 100k euro range rover vogues and suped up mg's, if i had forked out for one of these cars i wouldnt want a temp servicing it,
Im not sayinh im a halfwit but i had absolutley no knowlege of any of the cars i was working on,
Ring around a few other dealers and see what they say,

This could well be the catalytic converter which is rattling - loose baffles - usually worse when the engine is cold.
