Autobox Error
I just picked up my XC90 today from Wales, a 185 2006 exec, that gave me a nice drive to get used to it all the way back to Essex.
I am now worried, as on the journey home I got a transmission warning light with a message saying something like, "transmission needs a service" and I am sure the auto box stayed in 5th refusing to change up into 6th gear for ages, I stopped at a service station to "power my nose", and on returning to my journey all seemed well again, the message had disappeared and never returned, however when I was near home I am sure there were a couple jerky gear changes, maybe paranoid by this time. I will run the car into a Volvo specialist garage after the weekend, to see what they say. Does this sound serious? PS The car has covered 100K, with a full Volvo service history, and the car was checked by the AA before I picked it up. I also took out a bells and whistles warranty, so all should be well, apart from any hassle, obviously. |

From what you have said, you may have gone into "Limp Mode", but that is normally, a lower gear selection, than 5th. Good luck. tem. |

"Limp Mode"
My experiance (recent) with the D5 engine going into "Limp Mode", gives a speed of around 40 mph, at 3000 rpm.
In France, about a month ago, it went into "Limp Mode" and I could only manage, approximately, 25 mph. There seems to be different levels? XC60 with Volvo just now, to try and rectify this problem + a starting issue. tem. |

Sounds like it needs an autobox oil change. The gearbox monitors the ATF temperature and it triggers a warning when the oil has been above a certain temperature at times, and acumulated enough time to trigger the warning.
The warning can also be triggered if the ATF was changed without reseting the gearbox monitor warning, in which case the system keeps adding up the hot ATF times for old and new oil and gives an incorrect warning as it has no way of knowing the ATF has been changed until it is entered into the computer. Jerky gearchanges would indicate it needs an ATF change though. Roy
