Hi Phil, I have'nt given up on mine, but I've been having some other snags that have become more pressing!

Still following the thread with interest although the last few posts have sort of 'gone over my head'. Bit limited on teccy knowledge you see LOL.

Sounds like you are progressing, if only by illiminating things

The nut locks the position of the aperture plate, when you loosen it, it will try to shut off and you have to wedge it open while you re-tighten the nut. Just make sure that after adjustment it that it still shuts off completely when warm.

Thanks Isaac - I think I'm there with it at last!

I slackened the 7mm nut on the upper side of the AAV unit base and found there was a slot giving approx 5mm of adjustment. My present adjustment was at the end of the slot nearest the upright part of the unit. On cold this was only allowing the car to run at 500rpm - not enough to keep a cold engine going. I moved it to the other end of the slot, nipped the nut up and on start up the auto choke kicked in at 1500rpm. Took it for a run and the choke fully shut off to a warm idle of 900rpm. Have backed the adjustment off a bit and will tweek it to get down to 1100-1200rpm on cold start.

Many thanks for everyones help and suggestions, I've learn't a lot about the car in going through this and I'll update in a few days to hopefully confirm that all is tickety boo. Paul, try adjusting yours, should only take 5-10 minutes.

By the way, have invested in a multimeter and have justed check the battery and alternator - 12.86 volts and 14.07 volts respectively so they look ok at the moment. Would like to get the brushes out of the alternator to check them for wear but the bottom screw is not coming out. How I hate Philips screws!

All the best

Phil

Hoorah!
You deserved to sort it after all the effort you've put in, hopefully the car will give you a break now and let you enjoy some trouble free motoring!

Rockin' advice Phil. Just 'tweeked' mine & got about 1050rpm on start-up which after a few minutes settled to 900rpm

We'll see how it goes!

Great stuff Paul! Mines still ok. I think the reason why the adjustment is there is that there will be more engine drag on start up in cold climes than in hotter climes. If my reasoning is correct a greater airflow on start up will be required in extreme cold than extreme heat. Our geographical locations probably require a setting somewhere mid range.

Now to find and sort that buzzing relay....

Cheers

Phil
