New owner with rear speaker question
Hi guys. I just got my S40 a few days ago. I am very happy with the car. However, I have some questions about rear speakers. Currently there is no rear speaker and I want to add two speakers to the back.
Are the rear speaker 5"1/4 in size? Also is it possible to install the speakers myself? I see there are two brackets thing in the trunk. Do I just buy a 5 1/4 speaker and mount it there? There is also a board on the top so do I need to cut this board? How do I cut the board? And after I cut the board, are there any speaker grill I can put on? I also saw the rear speakers wires had a special kind of plug. Are there any special speakers that fit this? Thanks. |

RE: New owner with rear speaker question
Hi.
Yes the rear speakers are 5.25" or 13cm in diameter. It is possible to change them yourself, as I have done so. You can remove the standard grill by GENTLY pulling it up and to the side, and then you can undo the screws holding the speakers in from the top. NOTHING requires cutting at all. You will need to be careful of the heated window elements when you are removing replacing the speakers, and what I did with the plugs on the standard speaker wire is to leave them in place and push the speaker wires in from the new speakers into the holes in the plug. (I like to be able to return things to 'standard' easily if I ever sell the car). You should be able to gauge the polarity of the wires from markings on the old and new speakers. However, if at all in doubt, take the car to an audio specialist and let them do it for you. Won't cost a bomb and you will have the benefit of a guarantee. Later, Dan. |

RE: New owner with rear speaker question
Thanks Dan, but some more questions...
I dont have rear speakers now. There is nothing at the back, not even a speaker hole on the back, no grill, etc.. So I guess I will have to cut the back board, right? Also can you explained a bit further on the "push the speaker wires in from the new speaker"? You mean I can just plug the plug into the new speaker? I dont seem to be able to do this. Or do you have an adpater? Thank you for your help again. |

RE: New owner with rear speaker question
Hi.
No rear speakers? Are you sure? I was under the distinct impression that even the most base models came with a stereo and speakers. The website that has been shown to you on the vvspy website shows you how to fit the speakers, however there should be recesses in the rear parcel shelf for the speakers to drop into (once you have removed the grills) so they don't sit too high. Any chance you can take a photo of what you are looking at? Cheers, Dan. |

RE: New owner with rear speaker question
Thanks for all the help dan.
I took my car to an auto shop and have them install a pair of speaker yesterday. They had to cut a hole at the back so they can place the speaker in. Ya funny dont know why they dont have speakers in the back but 4 in the front! Anyways, thanks again |
