V40 Diesel
I know it might seem obscure but I want to know if anybody out there knows if the Renault Laguna 2.2 diesel engine would go into my 97' V40. I know Volvo uses the 1.9 Renault engine in these cars and I'm quite interested in putting one in if it will go. Any help would be appreciated.

RE: V40 Diesel
Have you considered the prospect of re-chipping your engine? Are you sure it is a Renault engine? The S/V40 is a Mitsubishi Carisma with Volvo badging and may be fitted with Mitsubishi's own diesel. I think you would be very pleasantly surprised at the result of chipping this engine. It will cost a lot less into the bargain.

RE: V40 Diesel
The other option is to fit a tuning box -- loads of tuners do these, visit www.tuningbox.com for info and some road tests. There are lots of other sites too that I can't remember the URLs for. They cost around £300 for a V40 diesel, the attraction being they are cheaper and easier to remove and refit than a full ECU remap.
If I remember right, a 102bhp diesel gives around 125bhp with a tuning box, and a 115bhp version gives around 140bhp, with torque increases to match. Basically the tuning box sits between the ECU and the electric diesel fuel pump, and runs the pump at higher speed, giving higher pressure at the injectors at a given rpm -- meaning better atomisation of the fuel. They don't affect turbo boost pressure. Don't know what the long-term effects of this are on pump life etc. If you visit www.tdiclub.com you'll see that most people there have tuned either by fitting a tuning box or by the full chipping option. |

RE: V40 Diesel
Thanks for the feedback. I'm pretty sure it's a renault engine but not the direct injection one, so I can't chip it or fit a tuning box hence wanting the bigger engine. The 1.9tdi angine puts out about 90bhp and the 2.2tdi puts out about 115bhp, both can see increases when tweaked on a rolling road. My car has done 155k and is getting a little tired (but not bad), that's why I'm considering it. Any more ideas gratefully recieved.

Andy, do check this website: www.bromleystuning.com
They list a tuning box for the 90bhp S/V40, which boosts power to 120bhp and torque by 30%. Didn't check the price. They are based in Lancs. and have had a number of products tested in mags like Diesel Car etc. Good luck |

Thanks Craig. I know Bromleys quite well, my mate had his S70 done there, didn't know they could do mine

RE: V40 Diesel
E-mailed Bromleys and they said they don't do a kit for mine, just the electronically controlled one like I thought. Thanks anyway, it was worth a try.
