Question w mode

I just wonder if because 'w' starts off in a higher gear would it make the gearbox be under more strain?and could it damage the internal clutches in the auto box if used to often? as a manual clutch im sure wouldn't last long if you always used 3rd gear to start moving??
Or is it a completely different kettle of fish?

Not knowing much about auto gearboxes, I'd imagine the slip would come from the torque converter, therefore no wear.

On the other hand it could be wearing away brake bands in the tranny.

For me, I just take it easy, turn off the traction control, and manually select 2nd or 3rd if I realy need to. On fresh snow you need a bit of wheelspin to dig in and get grip anyway...

I'm really impressed with how the car has managed in this recent snow - famous last words!
