My 2004 (04) V40 1.8 Sport For Sale *38k Miles*
I am selling my 2004 V40 1.8 Sport as I have a new car arriving on 7th February.
I have owned it from new, although I'm technically the second owner as it was pre registered by Asgard Solihull (now Johnsons) the day before purchase. The colour is Titanium (metallic grey), and comes with the optional winter pack (heated seats and headlamp wipers) as well as dealer fitted mud flaps. Standard specification includes cream leather interior, climate control, 16 inch alloy wheels and xenon headlamps. It has only covered 38,000 miles, and has a mixture of main dealer and reputable independent service history. It has 3 months MOT and Road Tax remaining. However, I will re MOT it if the full asking price is paid. Very good all round condition. Pictures to follow tomorrow. Price: £4,250 ono |

Sorry no pictures yet as was dark by the time I arrived home.
However, in light of the shockingly low trade-in value offered, I am dropping the asking price to £3,750. |

I fully appreciate the car market is very depressed at the moment, however, the VW dealer assessed it, described it as faultless and immaculate, and told me Glass's Guide valued it at £3,500...... A couple of phone calls later, he offered me £2,850 !!
Whilst a car is only worth the amount someone else is willing to pay for it, I am seriously tempted to tell him where to shove his £100 deposit and keep my V40. Given the age, condition, history and mileage it's worth more than £2,850 to me. |

The dealer is right its £3610 in excellent condition for a part ex so thats roughly what you should be looking for as a private sale. The dealer would ask maybe another £500 on top of that but thats not something a private seller would get away with. The problem is cars arent really selling at the moment so what its worth and what someone will buy it for are two different things. Have you tried the autotrader and ebay etc to sell it? My feeling would be to try and out it for £3500 and if it doesnt sell drop it to maybe 3200.
When we part bought our Audi they would only give us £5600 for my wifes golf when the book value was a another £1k higher in the end we sold it for £6k as it was more than the part ex was worth but still less then the second hand value. It sold within days of advertising it but gave us another £400 over what we would have made. Sometimes you just have to take a hit but it depends how much you want the new car. |

This is why I think eBay is a pretty good tool for true values of cars as it is likely that the max price is the most you would get anywhere in the UK as let's be honest I think most people nowadays check online such as eBay, autotrader and Pistonheads |

Car now sold - the best I could get for it was £3,200.
The researchers who compile the various used car guides (Glass's, Parkers, What Car?) need to get their act together, they are seriously out of touch with the current market. I am parting with the V40 for several hundred less than any of the guide prices, however, I also managed to sell my VW Golf diesel last week for significantly more than any of the guide prices - and it was due a cambelt change !! |
