Cutting out
Hi
I have a V70 2.5 auto 1999. When the engine is warm, and the car is in park, when I rev the engine, the revs climb as they should, then almost drop to cutting out. Also when I come to stop, revs drop to almost cutting out again. Any help please. |

don't know if its true for volvos, but it sounds to me like the idle control valve. I'm sure i'll be proved wrong shortly

Not sure if its any help but I had exactly the same problem on my 850S. I cleaned out the throttle valve flap unit thingy (see other posts), gave the MAF a good shot of contact cleaner, disconnected the battery for an hour and thoroughly cleaned the terminals and the terminal clamps. It took a about twenty miles to settle but I assume the ECU reset itself and now the car runs really smooth with a steady 800rpm idle (and its approaching 200k miles!). I don't know if what I did was right but it cost me nothing but an hours effort and the car is running great. Try it?

have had a similar problem on a previous car and it turned out to be a dirty MAF. first thing id try is removing the MAF and spraying de-greaser on the sensor inside the tube. let it dry out and refit.
alternately could be idle control valve. after that it gets a bit harder to figure out, maybe a vacuum leak, bad connection, faulty sensor, etc..

First a '99 car will have an electronic throttle module (ETM) have a look at the ETM forum.
The non turbo version also has an idle control valve, this may well be dirty or sticking so it's worth cleaning the ETM and the idle air valve. |
