940 saloon production
I would like to buy a RHD 940 petrol saloon from the UK but am finding a great number of estates and would prefer a saloon. How many saloons were made and what years were they available from and too? I would ideally like a 97/98 940 if they were available then with AC and ABS etc. I would really prefer a 940 as to a 98 on S40 S60 S80 diesel, eventhough there are some cheap 1000-2000 pound cheap diesels.
If anyone knows of a late 940 saloon I would be most interested. I would be looking to spend around 1000 pounds for the right car. Many thanks James. Last edited by 740 In France; Nov 9th, 2008 at 13:49. Reason: adding from the UK |

Bit older than you would like but low mileage, elderly owner for the last 10 years, these don't tend to rust (zero rust/rot on my '92 anywhere) and its only £600.....

Many thanks for all of the replies, sorry I haven't replied earlier but it has been very hectic here. The 1994 red wentworth looks a very clean car and I am more leaning towards an auto as it can't be as abused as a manual. Leather is a definate bonus as at least it is able to be cleaned. Thinking previous owners children weetting themselves!! The 1998 saloon on trade it must of sold as in is not on their website, sounded great!!
The two on ebay looked fine but I would prefer a dealer as you can spend a good deal of time looking at the car without the owner hassling you and take it on a long test drive with dealers permission. It would be great if I could find a 940 saloon within a 40 mile radius of Birmingham as my Dad lives there and would be able to look at the car for me before I flew over there to buy it. At the moment though there are no flights from Ryanair to Birmingham as they are all taken. It looks as though the earliest flight is at the end of March!!! Many thanks James. |

I know what you mean about Ebay, I have been buying my own cars since I was 17 and have never bought a dud excepting for a car sold to me with a false service history, cam belt went, lots of time and money to put right! This year I bought my first two cars ever on Ebay, Volvos, both problematic. My Volvo 740 off of Ebay had been standing, I didn't know, although the brakes were great when I got it home and looked properly they were all rusted, I managed to get replacements very cheaply (off Ebay!) but had I not got lucky on Ebay the parts would have been expensive. I'd paid top whack for it because it had a full Volvo service history right up to 150 thou. After the 740 was stolen I bought a 940 off Ebay. I really put it through it's paces, was delighted with it, bought it but my test drive was on the flat in the Fens. Only when I got it home did I realise it didn't pull uphill as it should, compression and then found I had a constant coolant loss---- head gasket. Most of my compression loss is down to the hg. The seller MUST have known about the head gasket, don't know how some people sleep at nights. Moral of the story, don't test drive a car in the Fens where it is totally flat! However, it's still a lot of car for the money, and the D24TIC engines seem to go on for ever with blown hgs if you keep the coolant topped up and if I get a year out of it I've certainly had my moneys worth. However, a woman I know has bought a whole string of cars off of Ebay, she knows nothing about cars whatsoever, never pays much more than £100 and has had some cracking buys! I would still buy off Ebay again but would as you say insist on lots so time to inspect and test drive but I recently read on here that even with fully comp insurance you are not insured third party when test driving a car to buy it-- don't know if this is true or not...........
