Default heating takes time to turn off

Hi all,

I'm driving 2001 S40 1.8 SE petrol and start having couple of problems with heating and fan.

Sometimes (becoming more often), when heating is turned on it will continue to heat even if turned off completely (knob to the blue all the way and fan on any setting). The way to solve the problem is to turn on air-conditioning on cold and let it for another 5-10 minutes. This also happens if the heating is turned on in the morning and not needed in the evening (day of work), it will start heating despite the setting although car was not working for 8-9 hours.

Noticed another thing which I don't know if it's normal, if I leave it to blow to the windscreen, so air conditioning will come up automatically but turn the fan to 0, the button for turning on aircon will go between amber and green every few seconds. No sure if on regular intervals or not (I know I sould RTFM but it's in the car ).

The second one seems to be more common, saw few similar posts, the fan will start blowing full power although it's on 1 or 2. It will go back to normal setting relatively soon so not very unpleasant as heating, but still annoying.

Been to my local garage (not Volvo dealer) and was told that I'd need ECU remap (or reset) and advised to go to the main dealer so decided to try here before I go expensive route.

Any advice is much appreciated.

Default heater blower

when switching to the screen demist position, the air conditioning automaticaly come on, to dispel any moisture in the car.

regarding the heater blower being eratic, it sounds very much like the blower resister has failed, simple to repair, parts cost £25, search for "blower resistor" and you will find postings on this topic

Thanks, seen this post already, will go to Maplin tomorrow.

Any idea what can be the cause of the first problem?
