Engine
Hi Guys, I am new to Volvo Club and the whole atmosphere is amazing.
A technical question and wonder if somone could shed light I bought 2 weeks ago Volvo S40 T4 1998. Lovely car with amazing power and handling. Two problems: 1) When I lift clutch and press accelerator in first gear or second, a noise comes from the off side(drivers) front like a hammering, I dont know what it is? A single noise as if something is loose. 2) What temperature the car should run at, in on board computer, the engine temperature goes to 90 degrees, I hav notice at this point fan does not cut off but no warning lights nor engine cuts off. What temp the fan is suppose to cut off? I will be gratefull if someone could respond. By the way had race with VW PASSAT 2.0 TDI, man I ****ed on him....what a joy!!! |

Welcome to the world of Volvo.
1, Top engine mount will be the likely culprit for the banging, it sits between the engine and inner wing, you cant miss it. 2, On my 2.0T the cooling fan comes on at 102 and brings the temp down to about 92/95 if I remember, normal driving temp is around 88/90 degrees I think, depending on thermostat fitted.

And I was scared to take the engine temp over 100 so I switch on heater with full blow to cool it. I will test the water next time I am in car. Last edited by MYT4Volvo; Nov 8th, 2008 at 13:05. |

Parts For Volvo do the top engine mount for my model for £75 odds, Don't know if it is the same for you, If you are handy with a spanner or 2 it is a couple of hours, remember to support the engine before you remove the original.
Try dropping Rufe a PM to see how much an original part is.

The engine mount is an easy job as long as you have a trolley jack to support the engine. I did mine in 20 minutes. The original Volvo part was only £3 more than the OEM spec German and Swedish supplied part(that was crap quality BTW). http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showth...t=engine+mount.
