Default What Oil

Its that time of year again and as its only a minor service im going to change
the oil, filter, air and cabin filter myself, the only problem i have is what oil.

Volvo 1 says 5w 40
Volvo 2 says 10w 40
Independent says 15w 40

Just had the volvo uk tech on the phone they now say that they recomend either 0, 5, 10w 30 HELP!!

From my understanding the w rating is the viscosity and the end is the effectivness at 100o so am i better off getting the 5w as it will reach the moving parts quicker or plumping fot the 10w at half the price

The mrs also has a 1.1 petrol and as my sump is 5.4l was going to but 2 5l and do her oil at the ame time.. can any oil be used in any engine?

any help greatly apriciated.

many thanks

Please don't quote me on this but I believe older models up to 2004 10w 40 is recommended. The newer models i think is 0w 30 for example V50 and NEW S40 and others if there is a sticker on the landing panel. With oil being so important I would defintley get a second opinion.

The first 3 are probably reccommending what they have a 1000 liter barrel of in their workshops.

Volvo tech are correct, in this country 0 5 or 10 at the bottom of the range is fine and cannot be bettered. 30 at the top is energy efficient and provided it says synthetic on the can it will be the equivelent of a non synth 40 at the top. Volvo tech would have assumed that you are using a full synthetic because that's what they reccommend for their cars.

You should be able to use the same oil in your wifes car, although you don't say what it is as long as you buy one of the oils reccommended for both types of engine. You won't find any shortage of suitable oils in the shops or on line.

Sorry I thought later I should have given a bit more advice after I posted. Next time you change if you want to use the Volvo oil it can be purchased very reasonably here.....

http://www.mapodo.de/product_info.php/products_id/444

They also do a variety of full synthetics all at rock bottom prices.

When you consider that the Volvo main dealers sell the genuine Volvo oil for in the region of £90 for 5 liters and they do it for about £30 for 5 liters you can see what a good deal it is.
