Whats the latest on ETM
Having just bought a 01 V70 T5, I have been getting more worried by the minute after reading all the posts. Does anyone know if the situation has changed recently (cost of replacement) ??. As I said mine is 2001 82,000 miles and the sticker is white.

The car could well have had the software upgrade and throttle clean by now so should be ok until the throttle shows sign of trouble when cleaning again may help , otherwise a new unit will be required but they are reasonably priced now .
No harm in checking with your dealer to see if yours has been done , if not , have it done ..

Hi,
The initial stage is an ETM clean and software update which, initially should resolve issues with the failing of the ETM..... This should be done for free by the dealer when you start experiencing some of the symptoms of ETM failure. If/when the unit fails then the replacement cost is around the £270 mark as Volvo have cut the cost of the repair/replacement. Whether this is acceptable to people is down to them - the legal route to reclaim the monies is still open should you wish to pursue it... It maybe the software and clean may solve the issue for a good while.. Something else to look out for, however, is the power steering reservoir/tank. Apparently, this can expand under the pressure of the fluid and may come into contact with the ETM and thus damage/burn it out... This is a rare occurrence (see only once on these forums so far) and maybe model specific. The tank needs to be next to the ETM module... Hope that is of help.. Des. . .

Thanks for that I might try to contact the previous owner, I have a fully stamped service record but no details or receipts for work done. Would any Volvo dealer be able to check what the ETM history is on this car.
Cheers me dears. |

If it has been Volvo maintained, then yes, they just need the reg or vin number.

Fwiw, I wouldn't stress about it too much if your car is running ok.
My C70 has 126K, only had the ETM software update/module clean at 122K but never showed any signs or symptoms of the ETM issue. still going strong ... touch wood.

Mine had the clean and upgrade at 172k, now on 189k... with no problems
I'd agree with DSK on not worrying about it too much until it becomes a problem Ed

Cheers thats what I wanted to hear, could do without huge bills at the moment. On the 850 Ive just swapped for this one the only expense apart from tyres and brake pads was windscreen washer pump in 7 years.
