I do recall when doing the rear brakes on my 740 I thought I had a new set of genuine pads (but they were 240 ones) - which did fit but had a slightly different profile along the top edge, and it was impossible to fit the clips.

Halfords and co. all listed the pads as the same for the years in question, but genuine Volvo ones were definitely not the same, although they would fit in the caliper and the retaining pins could be inserted.

Could a set of 740 ones have been fitted I wonder?

I really cant answer that Glen as Ian H. had them fitted , i have sent him a PM regarding this just waiting for him to get home from work and him replying . I know he did mention to me that he wished he took the car back to the garage to get the problem sorted . I guess looking at the problem now this would have been better , as he payed for the job to be done and it certainly isnt right thats for sure . Got the reciept here showing replace brake fluid , replace rear pads , for a total bill of £186.87p Yes you read correctly !

It may be the Girling vs ATE thing, I thought it was year to year when they changed for a particular market, but it maybe not. The type of brakes is coded in the model reference number somewhere, but I'm not sure exactly where.

You need to check what type of calipers you have (the retaining pins will show) and then make sure you have the correct pads, then get some clips to fit.

It doesn't help that ATE make pads to fit Girling brakes, and vice versa!

Girling brakes have a parallel pin held by an R clip and spring clip as well

ATE have a pin with a thinn end and sprung lump which locks it in and there is the wide retainer

Girling pads are a few mm longer than the ATE ones
