Default 760 GLE Exhaust problem

I have a 1989 760 GLE saloon, recently the exhaust has started to blow on a manifold joint, well I think it is one of the manifold joints, it is really hard to tell. There is no sign of any soot around the joints and when the engine has warmed up the noise almost disappears. The exhaust system is not very old and all the other joints are fine. Could it be one of the manifolds/ manifold gaskets? Has any one come across this problem before?

Hi,

Yes the manifold gaskets on my 940 started going south so changed them..

The problem is more noticeable when the engine is cold as expansion of materials seals the gaps.
The problem changing them is that the manifold is held in place by bolts on pins screwed into the block.
These rust into place like nobodys business so liberal application of an anti-locking solution is recommended (overnight at least). Not WD-40 but ... Damn, forgot the name of the stuff...
Also, even then they may shear so be prepaired!
Get new ones to replace when getting new gaskets..

my 760 hasn't got exaust gaskets on the downpipe at least. the downpipe is just a pressure fit to the manifold, 2 bolts hold it tight on both banks, its a bugger to line up perfect (mines blowing because of it) space is a nightmare but if your sure its the down pipe, beware its one pipe for both sides! replacing it is not a job for a diy unless you can get the car up high enough (or you take the gearbox off!) undo the downpipe from both sides and smear exaust sealer round the flanges and refit. that should do it. but if the pipe is rusty yove got some work ahead!

Jim, the gaskets referred to are manifold-to-head...
