ETM software update - what does the software do?
Many of us have had the ETM software updated and the unit cleaned out at the dealers. Having read on one of the ETM issue threads, the updated software simply slows down the failure of the ETM, got me thinking, does anyone know what the i) old software did and ii) what the new updated software does?
Lastly, as the ETM software to some degree communicates with the gearbox software (thats what the Volvo mechanic said), is there a possibility the existing gearbox software will also require an update to work correctly with the updated ETM software? If you have a search around on the net, you will find out how the ETM sensor "fingers" wear out the carbon tracks at the lower end of the rev range. One of the things the new software does is up the revs a bit at idle to keep the sensors off the worn areas of the carbon track.
The software also slightly desensitises the rev demand to omit the rev "bounce" which is also associated with the problem. I am not technically minded and someone else will hopefully be able to give a more specific answer. |

ETM Mod, what it does
The worn track on the ETM potentiometer causes "noise" which confuses the engine computer. It appears that they have increased the time before the engine computer signals an error.
As the wear gets worse there will come a time when the engine will start surging as others have reported here. I have had the sodtware mod done and so far so good. However, I know I am on borrowed time. It is not a fix, just a cover up. BTW my engine idle speed was not changed. |

I had a new etm and software update but the revs remained at around 750, is that were they should be?

etm udate revs
i have today had the etm update on my s 80 the revs still seem to be where they allways were but they do a couple of seconds of settle down when you first stop, they seem to hover around 1500 for a few seconds then drop back down to 7-750. i assume this is the bit of the software update that prevents the computers reacting to noise to soon. all seems ok though
