Default EGR Valve Removal, 2001, S40, 1.9TD, Engine Number D4192T3

Can anyone help with how I remove the EGR valve. Apparently it needs either cleaning or changing as it can affect engine economy, performance and can cause the car to stall. 3 bolts hold it onto what I think is the exhaust manifold but even when I remove them I cannot remove the valve. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions as to the possibility of the valve being responsible for stall problems that I'm still having and whether it can be cleaned when removed or does it need a straight replacement. Is there a special tool to remove it? I haven't been too forceful when trying to remove it for fear of unnecessary damage being cause.

Any ideas greatly appreciated
