Default XC90 - B5D DPF Regeneration

Coming back to the fold and looking to purchase a 2020 - 2022 XC 90. Fuel of choice was expected to be the mild hybrid petrol but there seems to be better deals on the B5D diesels. In recent years my annual mileage averages under 10k. Having avoided DPF issues with my 2017 Santa Fe and current 2021 VW Tiguan., I am just trying to see if I can expand on my car usage to add some additional 12 mile round trip, short journeys.

From what I have read in these forums about the D5 diesels, it would appear that a steady run of about 20 plus miles every tankful should allow regen thereby avoiding issues. Hoping that this is also true for the newer B5D engines.

Thanks in advance

I would not worry about the DPF and regeneration, I have 4 XC90 D5's (3 mk1's and my mk2 which I have had for 8 years now, my use is mainly very short trips of a few miles, school runs and shopping trips etc and do around 5k miles a year and I have never had any problems, I just use the car as normal and do not go on 20 mile runs just for DPF/Regen it will do its own thing as required.

I’ve just sold my 3.5 year old XC90 B5D with a mere 19,000 miles on the clock (bought during Covid and my driving patterns and distances never went back to what they were). Again, no DPF or oil level problems doing primarily short journeys. You can tell when a DPF regeneration is happening anyway, the stop/start disables itself and you can notice a very slight change in engine note under braking - so I was careful not to switch the engine off mid-cycle.

We also have a 6 year old diesel Seat Leon that does nothing but short journeys (was initially the wife’s company car, so no choice on the diesel, but we bought it when the lease was up). Again, no DPF issues at all.

I’m not denying that diesels are better suited to longer journeys, I just don’t think that all manufacturers / models are as badly affected as, say, the likes of Land Rover (lots of DPF and oil dilution horror stories on the Discovery Sport Forum).

My patterns have changed since covid and I do more short than long journeys in my V60 D4 now. My oil level rises by 2-3 notches over a year and 9-10 thousand miles, this appears to be expected as on my last two dealer services they filled the oil 3 bars short of full.
There is no real point in going for 20 minute drives unless you spot a regen in progress, as according to my OBD reader the regen only ever starts when the counter reaches 100%, it does not seem to need a particularly hot engine or motorway speeds and seems to regen fine around town.
