try not to over think mpg figures as each individual journey can have variables lights traffic weather ect as clan says dpf should do its thing in the background and will tell you when things are going wrong with a dash message sit .back drive and enjoy your car

Yes, I know ! Too much thinking is a bad thing !!
However, the mpg only varies maybe a mile up or down from the "normal" average figure and what prompted my post was the fact that on a known road, with the average in normal range, the figures dropped enough for me to notice.
Once I clocked this drop I watched the figure fall over a five mile, 50mph consistent speed, in 5th gear.....that's what got me thinking about regeneration but I had no way of knowing if it was happening.
I started with the sticky brake syndrome causing the problem but then moved on to regeneration possibility.

As you and Clan quite rightly point out MPG figures can vary widely but I was using the figure as an indicator for other issues...had a few with this motor !!!

yes unfortunately volvo dont have an indicator of when regen is taking place which can end up with the car being stopped mid regen some honda cars have a message light when its happening so you can continue the drive to complete the process

yes its a common thing it can happen on any diesel engine equipped with a dpf including all the popular makes .its well documented if you search rising oil levels.

Get yourself a veepeak obd reader £20 or so, download car scanner app and you can monitor the regen in real time, lets you know to carry on for the fifteen minutes it takes to clear the dpf and avoid the unburnt diesel ending up in your sump.
As pointed out earlier the regen is pretty solid in the Volvo.
My D4 2.4 regens when there is 26gm of soot showing and it finishes to under 6gm in the space of 10-15 minutes.
