It's finally happened. My XC60 D5 manual, MY2016 hit one of the many pot holes in our area and the jolt activated the siren and an array of lights to rival that of the Northern Lights.
Numerous fault codes couldn't be cleared by the local garage, nor a local auto elect. They sympathised and said it had to go in to the main dealership. A list of codes a mile long and after diagnostics the news given that a new SRS module is required at a cost of £899 inc. Hope you can read the attachment so you can see the codes. To plug it in cost £132. Still cheaper than changing the car to something that isn't as good. Cant complain, first real problem after 66,500 miles. Is it worth keeping the defective unit? Could it be revived? |

Have you seen comments on the N Devon pothole community social media page? Some serious damage to vehicles is shown there and the Devon C Council will fight everything quoting various policies they work to. Mainly, if they aren't aware of a road defect, how can they be expected to fix it. Even when they are made aware of a defect by a member of the community, it has to meet criteria for them to repair. They have time to go and inspect anything reported to see if it meets the criteria, they then have time to repair. I reported one months ago, it's still there and getting worse each day. Pointless complaining. I firmly believe they don't actually check the condition of the roads themselves in their role they wait for the public to report defects to them. I'm hoping my extended warranty company will cover the claim but I doubt it.

So you hit a pothole which has caused the SRS module to fail??
I mean the jolt from the pothole can trick the car into thinking it has been in a collision yes but normally the crash data can be reset unless it has locked. Must have been a big hole! Hopefully your suspension and alloys are ok.

It was just a thought. I too live in North Devon, DCC, say no more.
That said I see your attached print shows initial state readings. I would be more interested in the delivery (tab?) readings. I also wonder if a reset is all that may have been needed ? |

I have no idea what the various tabs that you talk of mean. I took the car to a local mechanic and he read things, I asked if he could do a reset and said he could not clear the codes. I then took it to an auto electrician he recommended and he said he could not get communication with the unit and feared it may need a new ECU. He said I'd have to go to the main dealer. I asked for the fault codes and this is what the main dealership gave me. I have a person I trust at another main dealership and having seen what I posted in the image, they said the same, they would be changing the ECU. I will request the unit they take out, I cant do anything with it and I wondered if anyone may know if there are people who could make it useable.
Re deep pot holes, yes, there are some serious road defects in this area. The DCC Highways dept is a joke. I reported a defect recently that was about 8" deep alongside a drain cover. They eventually did a 'repair' leaving it about 2" below the main road surface. I really fear for road users down here. I have just changed two tyres on the wife's car and speaking to the fitters, they were telling me of what they are seeing. They said one guy was told of two bulges in a tyre, he couldn't afford to change it. He went out and came back today having suffered a blow out. |

call crash data in liverpool they do a postal repair service for srs modules which have logged an internal fault which cannot be removed by any other means.. a scan with a good diagnostic tool would indicate what type of fault is logged the permanent code is usually a cfff code. internal fault.

Got the car back today after a new SRS control module was fitted and programmed to the car. Just for info, today's cost £899. The diagnostic check prior to that was £132. All done at a Volvo main dealership.
I'll make some enquiries with some companies I've been told may be able to repair the old unit to see if the cost of doing that is worthwhile. I submitted a claim on my MotorEasy plan B extended warranty and they have rejected it, stating that my comment of a jolt after (possibly) hitting a pot hole, (or road defect), would be classed as an accident and they don't cover repairs caused by accidents etc. Take from that what you will. Personally the warranty isn't worth the paper its written on and I regret taking it out. The Volvo tech stated the module failed because of internal component failure. I guess an external company would be able to verify that down to component level. |

Simmy, where is the unit fitted? The tech said the centre console has to be removed. Also a part of the cost I had to pay the main dealer was for programming the new unit to the car. How did you get on with matching/programming your repaired unit to your car? I just wonder if there was some programming that had to be done and were you able to do it? I certainly don't have any kit to do that, nor would I feel safe in doing such a thing.
I'm just wondering about knowledge the defective unit had actually been repaired and if it was a case of simply plug and play. £65 is a no brainer to have the old unit repaired and keep it for a rainy day. I see there are quite a few of these defects being reported and I cant help wonder if it us going to pop up again in a couple of years time. I had thought about changing the car, but tbh, the cost implications in buying another are ridiculous and the new models aren't a patch on this variant. So it is wise option to fix and keep. |
