Default Rear hatch strut

The LHS rear hatch strut (electric open & close) on my wifes XC 40 is making weird noises when opening / closing. I've tried oiling / greasing it but I'm now aware they have internal gear drives and more than likely it will need replacing.
Seen them on line for around £160 each. Does anybody have experience of doing this and are they an easy swop. On some forums they mention having them "calibrated". Dread to think what Volvo would charge.

Took it into local dealers who said VOLVO would contribute towards cost of having both done. Cost to us £310. Went ahead with it. On collecting the car they advised there would be no cost to us at all, a good will gesture from volvo. Perhaps something to do with us having purchased 6 volvo's.
Also my wife is thinking of buying a new EX 30 but stressed she wasn't interested in buying it if parts broke after 4 years.

I'm coming to the conclusion that many of the parts fitted to the "newer" models are just not fit for purpose and the repair/maintenance is below the level that we should expect!

Having had the "rising oil level" saga last year, at my last visit (3rd oil and filter change within 3 months) I suggested that I might reject the car if it happened again. Since I got the vehicle back I have had a full oil reading and full ad blu too. I cannot get any more ad blu into its tank! That's no ad blu in around 7 months and several thousand miles! I've tried to find out whether the system can be shut off. People say it's not possible, others say it's possible but would be illegal, no-one really seems to know. The yearly service and MOT is coming soon. It will be interesting to see what happens when I confront the service manager! I'm also getting better mpg, interestingly!
