P2 power steering pump is far easier to change. Don’t need the wheel off for a start and can be done from above.

Without the use of a ramp the pump on P3 is awkward but doable with arch liner and wheel off. Ac compressor needs unbolting and moving slightly. Removal of both belts. A good opportunity to replace the main aux belt and you cut the power steering one off anyhow.

The pump can be pressure tested but from what you say sounds like the pump. There is a valve in the rack if I recall correct than can also cause steering problems but pump failure is far more common. When these cars were new they had issues with pumps and pipe work from what i remember not that it’s related now. Later cars with the hyd electric system have a much smaller belt and pump so it’s a bit easier on them. Still not a nice job laid on your back.

Yeah. I figured as much… P2’s seem easier to work on. Definitely will be a garage job.

What would you estimate labour wise for a garage to do it? Just a rough ball park estimate. 3 and a half hours?

I think you’re about right there at about 3-3 1/2 hrs. I wouldn’t expect it to be any more than that. May even be slightly less if it all comes apart ok.

I'm not a full time mechanic, but it took me at least 6 hours to do the pump, mainly because of lack of access. You are fighting with pipework to get your hands to the bolts on the back of the pump and when you take apart the pulley on the front, you are fighting with the limited space to get a socket in and even worse, when you are re-assembling, trying to blindly line the bolts back up

Yep. Access does seem very tight.

I'll let the garage do it. I'm not even going to attempt it myself.

I'll try and source a decent brand aftermarket power steering pump and pay the labour for them to fit it. Genuine pumps are too expensive and its 17 year old car with 163k on it.

Get the Meyle pump, less than £200 and several members on this forum have fitted one (myself included 10k miles ago)

If you want to give me your VIN I can check the one I previously linked is compatible with your car

That's very kind, thank you. I'll send you a PM.

You have an early chassis number, so VIDA says your Volvo part number is 36000790

So that volvo part number cross-references to a slightly different Meyle pump than mine

Thanks for your reply and your help.

How do you know its an early chassis number? Is there a way in telling?

So for example, that picture shows "CH 83618". Then there's another listing below that "CH 83619"... how do you know which is the right one? So the 83618 is a different pump to 83619?
