Default XC90 Sloppy Manual Gearstick

I bought a 2009 manual D5 XC90 this afternoon. The chap said he would drive as no insurance for me. Sitting in the passenger seat he paced it up the road for a few miles and seemed ok. Checked the prop shaft underneath and general look over. Leaving his drive and I noticed the gearstick was sloppy. No trouble getting it through the gears but I had to be careful to find the gears especially 3,4, 5 and 6. His average mpg on his trip computer was reading 31.5 which I thought rather low for the manual. I reset it and was determined to see how much I could achieve. It was all dual carriageway and motorway for the 110 mile trip home going into 5th at 40mph and 6th at 50 . Looking ahead all the time hardly touched the brakes and the trip read 53.5 mpg when I got home.
But I am concerned about the sloppy shifting and if it spells trouble. Had I test driven it, I’d have immediately picked up on it.
One other thing..does driving it below 2000rpm all the time lead to EGR problems. I’ve seen elsewhere that they need driving hard.
